Classic Car Weekend in June to Feature ‘60s TV Car

BISMARCK (UTN) – “Holy afterburner, Batman. It’s time to buckle-up for a ride in the Batmobile!”

One of the most recognized and popular automobiles of entertainment history is set to visit Bismarck-Mandan during the area’s classic car weekend June 11-12.

The TV crime-fighting-mobile, designed by the late Hollywood customizer George Barris, will be on display for photos and rides at United Tribes Technical College (UTTC) on Saturday, June 11 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Batman fans are encouraged to attend in costume.

The college will conduct a raffle for a limited number of rides in the Batmobile to raise funds for student scholarships.

Batmobile Lore
The Batmobile is an American automobile icon. Barris Kustom City built the muscle-car version in 1965 for the 20th Century Fox television program starring Adam West. Bristling with mock crime fighting gadgets, the ‘60s TV Batmobile is a fixture of pop-culture. Fifty years later, its touring versions, based on the original design, continue to attract throngs of entertainment and automotive fans wherever it goes.

Ticket to Ride
The UTTC event on Saturday, June 11 is the only opportunity during the classic car weekend in Bismarck-Mandan where fans can have a close-up experience with the famous vehicle – to be photographed with the car and its owner in costume as an official Batman impersonator, and possibly have the ride of a lifetime.

Raffle tickets are on sale now at UTTC and participating area businesses to win a ride in the Batmobile on the college campus. Proceeds go to scholarships for students attending the tribal college.

“We extend a warm welcome to everyone to visit the campus for this entertaining time on Saturday, June 11,” said UTTC President Russ McDonald. “We’re grateful to all who would take part in an event that raises support for students. Going to college takes resources and this is one way, a fun way, to help our students.”

The Batmobile event at UTTC begins at 11 a.m. and concludes at 5 p.m. on the campus at 3315 University Drive, adjacent to the airport in south Bismarck.

Admission is free. The event features refreshments and entertainment for youngsters and the entire family, including music by ‘Batman’s Own’ Johnny Green and the Greenmen, whose leader Johnny Green appeared in the Batman TV series.

Free parking is available and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. A portion of the proceeds will also go to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

The Batmobile will also be on static display as the featured car of the “Buggies and Blues” car show Sunday, June 12 in Mandan, ND.
