Senators Use Week to Highlight Important Work of Tribal Colleges in Helping Native Students Achieve
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp led a bipartisan group of 21 senators in recognizing the vital contributions of the educators, students, and facilitators of higher education at tribal colleges and universities across the country by introducing a bipartisan resolution designating this week as National Tribal Colleges and Universities Week.
In North Dakota alone, thousands of students enroll each year in the state’s five tribal colleges: Turtle Mountain Community College, Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College (formerly Fort Berthold Community College), United Tribes Technical College, Sitting Bull College and Cankdeska Cikana Community College.
“Too often, bright young talent in our Native communities is stifled by a lack of opportunity, but tribal colleges and universities across the nation have a mission to change that,” said Heitkamp, a member of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. “It’s because of the dedication of each educator at tribal colleges and universities that I introduced this bipartisan legislation to commemorate their work.”
Joining Heitkamp in recognizing the week of February 7, 2016 as National Tribal Colleges and Universities Week include a bipartisan group of 20 other senators: John Barrasso (R-WY), Jon Tester (D-MT), Patty Murray (D-WA), Al Franken (D-MN), Tom Udall (D-NM), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Jerry Moran (R-KS), John Hoeven (R-ND), Steve Daines (R-MT), John Thune (R-SD), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), Mike Rounds (R-SD), Gary Peters (D-MI), James Lankford (R-OK), and Brian Schatz (D-HI).
