U.S. Census Director visits UTTC
February 5, 2016

John Thompson, director of the U. S. Census Bureau, gestures during a press interview February 4 at United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck. UTTC was a stop on Thompson’s visit to the region to meet with Great Plains tribal leaders to begin early preparations for the 2020 Decennial Census and gain feedback about improving the count in tribal areas. Thompson confirmed what tribes know, that there has been, what he called, a “differential undercount” in previous census taking. He said that was “troubling” to the agency and the reason to work very hard to overcome it. The February 5 meeting in Fort Yates, ND was a formal Census Bureau consultation, one of eight planned by the bureau with tribes around the country.
